Typological identification
Early/Middle Roman Asia Minor Lamp, red-on-white
Description
Circular outline. Circular, concave discus has figural relief, filling hole to lower right, and three framing grooves creating two narrow, rounded rims. Figure depicts nude child facing right, holding grape clusters in upraised hands, left foot raised as if dancing. Plain, sloping shoulder. Heart-shaped nozzle with circle at indentation; traces of burning. Narrow, pierced handle with two grooves attaches to mid-body.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Fabric: 2.5YR 6/8, light red. Slip: 10R 5/8, red. White underslip. Ephesian fabric. Semiglossy, thick, somewhat uneven slip, detaching in small and large flakes on all surfaces.
