Description
Circular outline. Circular, concave discus has relief and wide, rounded framing ring; small, circular airhole over front ring. Relief depicts bare-chested, muscular, winged(?) man lunging right with spear at waste (hunter? venator?) on far left discus and large animal with shaggy fur and long tail curled upward (lion?) facing left on far right discus. Narrow, rounded shoulder without discus rim has row of single circles. Short, heart-shaped nozzle has single circle at top indentation. Large ring handle with two central grooves attaches at back discus rim and back wall ca. 11 mm above base. Circular base has wide, raised base ring.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Fabric: 5YR 7/8, reddish yellow. Slip: 10R 6/8, light red. Fine, soft fabric has very rare, very small, subrounded(?) black particles, uncommon, small, subrounded to subangular, white (calcitic) inclusions, and very rare, medium-sized, angular, red chunks. Non-micaceous content. Thin, semilustrous, uneven slip on exterior and continuing inside, brushed and smoothed around shoulder and walls.
Preservation comment
20 fragments, 15 joining, preserve roughly one quarter of discus, almost entire shoulder, roughly one third of nozzle, entire handle, much of back and side wall, and roughly one third of base. Slight, extensive abrasion; slight, sparse patches of encrustation in grooves.
