Zoomorphic askos, or less likely a large figurine. Erect right ear, handmade and incised, luted onto top of head with gentle curve flattening at top. Appears to be a dog. Very finely crafted, as Knidian products.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Fabric: surface (2.5 mm) red, core dark gray; very fine, smooth break: rare, well sorted, very small, rounded, white (calcitic) inclusions; golden micaceous at break and surface. Consistently fired very hard. Thin, even, semiglossy slip, faint metallic sheen, slightly more red than fabric. Exterior carefully smoothed; details sharply incised. Southwestern Asia Minor, overall manufacture and material as Knidian production.
Preservation comment
One sherd preserves one ear of figure and small part of adjacent head. Well preserved surface but slightly worn breaks(?) and extensive, thin encrustation on breaks and in details of incised relief.
