Description
Large, wide dish. Thickened, rounded rim offset on interior by light groove; curving wall; low ring foot with wide sloping inner face. Floor shows two identical adjacent stamps, both lightly impressed (H. 7.8 cm): frontal nude Dionysos/Bacchus in contrapposto; drapery over left forearm, holding cluster of grapes and two large flanking grape leaves in left hand; extended right hand pours from long-necked amphora into mouth of four-legged animal with raised head (panther?). Compare identical stamp in Barcelona (see comparanda) for more sharply preserved detail; animal at left and arrangement of grapevine are essentially unrecoverable on Ke1247. Stamp at right is slightly elevated in relation to stamp on left. One concentric spiral creates a set of three grooves except at inner and outer ends, where four grooves can be counted.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Fabric slightly granular with occasional small to medium light chunks, some visible on interior surface due to wear, and on exterior; fired to consistent red with no core. Thick interior slip is slight lighter, not well smoothed; exterior of vessel is unslipped and shows turning brush marks as well as linear smoothing brush mark made when vessel not turning on wheel.
Preservation comment
Five joining sherds preserve ca. 20% of rim, entire base profile, and well under 50% of entire vessel. Slip is chipped and worn in streaks and patches, though overall it is well preserved on large stretches of interior. Very slight to absent abrasion and very rare scratching; mostly clean breaks; scattered small patches of encrustation.
