Description
Concave discus with figural relief has filling hole right, raised edge, and single flat framing ring. Figure is female bust left with hair banded across crown and tied in tight chignon, one large curl and/or earring at side; stern expression. Julio-Claudian hairstyle suggests historical portrait: Corinthian adaptation of Italian type proposed by Bailey as portrait of Livia? (BMLII, p. 143, no. Q 807, pl. 5, fig. 47). Shoulder has ovules. All details are crisp and clean.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Typical buff fabric, firing, and surface treatment: pinkish buff; slightly gritty texture; smooth break; very fine. Large thumbprint preserved on interior from pressing clay into mold.
Preservation comment
One small sherd preserves ca. 30% of upper right discus with very small part of adjacent shoulder. Good condition; clean, sharp breaks.
