Samos Cistern Amphora
Description
Cylindrical body with convex wall curving upward over shoulder toward tapered neck. Lower attachment for oval to rectangular vertical handle supported by large, irregular blob of applied clay. Shallow, somewhat narrow ridging over shoulder and down body. Uneven, coarse brushstrokes over excess clay.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
SCA Fabric 2: dark brown with a tinge or orange; hard fabric, granular break; uncommon lime specks and very rare other dark bits; sparkles over surface (micaceous); thin, dull wash, slightly darker than fabric. Eastern Aegean/western Asia Minor.
Preservation comment
One large sherd preserves small part of shoulder and lower attachment of one handle. Slight, somewhat extensive abrasion and scoring; worn breaks; thin, extensive encrustation.
