Small Agora M334=Saraçhane Type 15 (early-mid-6th century)
Description
Low, rounded shoulder; narrow, cylindrical neck. Loop handle attaches at shoulder and upper neck; oval in section with very light flat ridging.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
To the extent that it can be observed through scorching: reddish brown(?), fired more pale on interior; somewhat fine, somewhat hard; slightly granular to hackly break; rare, small and rarely medium, rounded lime particles; common, other tiny to small sandy bits, well sorted: spherical, mostly sparse but well-sorted, dark red (and brown or black?) but a few light (quartz); rare, small to medium, angular, offwhite chunks (limestone?). Thin, black liquid matter, apparently a sealant, smeared and dribbled over upper handle and shoulder. Turning ridges on exterior surface; turning marks on interior. Southern Phoenician. Cf. KTH1643?
Preservation comment
One large sherd preserves one handle and contiguous parts of shoulder and neck. Slight, sparse abrasion; slightly worn breaks; thin, widespread encrustation. Extensive post-depositional burning on exterior face only.
