Samos Cistern Amphora
Description
Short vertical rim with rounded upper edge, short triangular neck with light spiral on surface; single thick strap handle with one wide upper groove. Surfaces essentially plain; extant interior surface lightly smoothed, no turning ridges. The neck is not so vertical as on main series, but overall appearance, particularly of the handle, suggests a related production. The fabric is not sufficiently similar by eye to any of the LRA2 fabric to call this a regional imitation.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Fine, hard, light reddish-brown fabric with very tiny glistening bits (distinct, much smaller, from main series of Samos Cistern Amphora), some other tiny light bits; fabric is quite clean overall. Cf. KTH0481.
Preservation comment
One sherd preserves ca. 10% of rim, 25% of neck, and one entire handle. Moderate, extensive abrasion and chipping around edges; extensive, thin film of encrustation.
