Description
Low disc base on thick lower wall widely flaring in curve from thickened middle. Thick-walled, tubular wick-holder tapering upward with cup or socket at bottom (Diam. interior 0.020 m) pulled out when bowl turned on wheel (not applied since no clay at base annealing it to bowl). Three clean, vertical cuts spaced out around wickholder through its wall at base. Wheelmade. Swirling string marks and excess clay on bottom.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
5YR 6/6, reddish yelow. Coarse, dense, hard fabric, evenly fired to brick-like state, with frequent, small to medium-sized, subrounded to angular white and black (small) to grey and red (medium) rocky(?) inclusions. Slightly gritty or mealy surface. Thin, dull, somewhat uneven wash same color as fabric on interior only. Very thin coating of lime applied to interior and exterior bowl and inside socket, preserved in patches. IsthmiaXI, p. 216: Palaimonion cult-lamps Ware III. Sim. Corinthian cooking fabric.
Preservation comment
One large fragment preserves over three quarters of base and small part of wall. Slight to moderate, somewhat extensive encrustation.
