Description
Circular discus has figural relief that overlaps edge, filling hole above center, raised rim, and one prominent, narrow, rounded framing ring with deep grooves. Relief depicts two gladiators: left one, apparently a thrax, with small square shield (parmula), crested helmet with wide, curved brim, strapped right arm, curved sword (sicca), thick loincloth (subligaculum), and greaves; right one with loincloth and greaves. In this type right gladiator is victorious, standing upright but leaning right in a dynamic pose, turning back to his opponent with sword raised up, while left figure is vanquished, sitting on the ground with legs bent behind attacker. Plain, flat shoulder with rounded rim with small airhole at nozzle just below framing ring. Volute nozzle.
Fabric, firing, surface
Fabric: 7.5YR 7/4, pink, to 7.5 YR 8/2, pinkish white. Slip: 7.5YR 5/4, brown. Somewhat hard, medium fine fabric with gritty texture; uncommon, small, rounded, white (lime) inclusions and rare darker bits. Uneven, thin, semilustrous, splotchy slip, peeling extensively in tiny flakes. Corinthian.
