Late Roman Athenian Lamp, late unglazed (“postglaze”)
Description
Circular outline. Circular, concave, plain discus with raised rim has central filling hole, three small holes around, and prominent, rounded framing ring. Shoulder has narrow groove containing herringbone in low relief, three transverse grooves, below which are two circles and three more transverse grooves. Rounded nozzle framed by double angled grooves has airhole at top, two single circles flanking, and short channel to wickhole; traces of burning. Thick, tall, pierced handle has two grooves above.
Fabric, firing, surface
5YR 6/6, reddish yellow; unevenly fired? Hard, fine fabric with smooth break and surface texture. Unglazed.
Preservation description
Two large joining fragments preserve entire discus, most of shoulder, small part of nozzle, and upper handle. Very slight abrasion; somewhat worn breaks.
