Typological identification
Late Roman Athenian lamp, late glazed
Description
Tear-shaped(?) outline. Tear-shaped(?), concave discus with three raised circles across base of handle, raised rim, and rounded framing ring. Sloping shoulder has herringbone in low relief. Low, thick, solid handle has three grooves; suture is poorly trimmed along back of upper handle but there is no discernible ledge along rim.
Fabric, firing, surface
Typical firing, fabric, and surface treatment for ware. Fabric: 7.5YR 6/6, reddish yellow. Slip: 10R 4/4, weak red. Thick, even, lustrous slip.
Preservation description
One small fragment preserves upper handle and small part of shoulder. Moderate, extensive abrasion; worn breaks; heavy, extensive encrustation.
