Late Roman Athenian lamp, late glazed
Description
Tear-shaped body. Oval(?) discus has shell spread toward nozzle, wavy lines at corners and handle, and single concave petal at center base of handle. Sloping shoulder has herringbone in relief. Thick, pierced handle with two grooves; lower handle has flanking grooves.
Fabric, firing, surface
Typical fabric, firing, and surface treatment for ware. 2.5YR 6/8, light red. Slip: 2.5YR 5/6, red. Somewhat soft, slightly gritty fabric.
Preservation description
Three joining fragments preserve ca. 33% of shoulder, <25% of discus, and upper handle. Slight, extensive abrasion with minor scoring; worn breaks; patches of sandy encrustation. Secondary scorching on middle discus.
