Description
Head of female from small figurine in frontal orientation. Face is flat and features are simple: deeply set eyes; steep, large nose; slightly rounded, receding chin. Long neck tapers downward. Small ears wear discoid earrings. Hair forms single row of small, solid curls like lozenges that arcs in halo between temples over forehead. High band rises vertically up to molding seam, apparently a wreath or crown. Figure depicts a woman with elaborate adornment, but poor condition masks quality of craftsmanship.
Fabric, firing, surface
2.5YR 6/6, reddish tan, to 10R 5/6, red. Somewhat soft, dense, fine clay with uncommon, small, well-sorted, rounded, white (lime) and rare black bits (carbon?). Thick, even, matte white paint preserved in patches across face and headdress; thin, uneven, matte red paint brushed over white paint on headdress.
Preservation comment
One large fragment preserves nearly entire front half-molding of face and coiffure. Slight, sparse chipping along upper margin; heavy, extensive abrasion has dulled all features and edges.
