Conservation
1960s: mended with natural shellac and infilled with plaster painted gray.
Description
Hemipsherical bowl with molded relief on wall to base and high, plain rim with slightly everted lip. Medallion: surrounded by at least one ridge. Calyx: row of long ferns separated by tiny ferns. Wall: one register with repeated scene of Rape of Ganymede (Zeus striding right, bent forward, holding outstretched Ganymede in arm, with large eagle perched over left shoulder; flying Nike to right. Small nikai separating scene below. Rim: framed row of ovolo; single rows of spirals above and below.
Fabric, firing, surface
Reddish orangish fabric variable fired with wide areas buff at very surface. Somewhat fine, soft, with smooth break and vaguely powdery texture; uncommon, well sorted, tiny to small, spherical lime particles. Thin, semimatte(?) flip, brownish black but mottled, very poorly preserved only in severely peeling patches and specks in relief. Corinthian.
Preservation comment
12 joining sherds (402) and two nonjoining sherds (1263/1264) preserve ca. 25% of bottom and wall and 8% of rim. Extensive, slight to moderate abrasion with slight scoring and rare gouging; worn breaks; faint specks to small patches of thin encrustation.
