Hellenistic Moldmade Bowl (“Megarian Bowl“)
Description
Hemispherical bowl with molded relief on wall and tall, plain rim with slightly everted lip. Wall: small lotus leaves in imbricate pattern. Rim: band of simple guilloche framed by grooves.
Fabric, firing, surface
Pale buff fabric, consistently fired. Fine, somewhat soft, with smooth break. Mostly clean with very rare lime specks. Thin, even, semimatte slip, brownish black to grayish black but mottled, peeling everywhere in large flakes. Corinthian.
Preservation comment
Five joining sherds preserve 15% of rim and large part of wall down toward base. Slight, extensive abrasion and incipient flaking; worn breaks.
