Description
Hemispherical bowl with molded relief on wall and high, plain rim and slightly everted lip. Wall: eight(?) pairs of Poseidon and Amymone in single register. Poseidon frontal in counterpoise, facing right, bare-chested but draped from shoulders and waist, right arm outstretched to Amymone and left arm holding trident; Amymone frontal in counterpoise, facing down to left, wearing long chiton, left arm flexed up to hold drape at shoulder and right arm hanging to hold hydria. Rim: framed band of large egg-and-dart.
Fabric, firing, surface
Pale yellowish brown with a tinge of red, consistently fired; somewhat fine, soft, with a smooth break; uncommon, well sorted, tiny to small, most dark gray but also lime bits. Traces of slip survives across surface in tiny flakes and specks; thin, even?, semilustrous?, brownish black. Corinthian.
Preservation comment
Seven sherds in three large nonjoining segments--one nonjoining (1496) plus three joining and one nonjoining (51+401+1496) plus two joining (401)--represent ca. 25% of rim and wall down to curve to base. Extensive, moderate abrasion and gouging; severely worn breaks; rare specks of encrustation in grooves.
