Gradual natural accumulation of sediment from roughly Early Byzantine period onward that contains much residual earlier material and very sparse material representing activity in area during Modern era. Relatively shallow depth of this deposit spanning several centuries presumably reflects ongoing impact of sheet erosion that has removed sediment over sea cliff. Uppermost level thoroughly intermingled with contents of WWII ditch cut down through area (deposit B10) so that it is impossible to distinguish topsoil from mid-20th century fill.
Recent and ongoing formation, with much residue of all periods.
Explanation of deposition
Byzantine-Modern colluvium and topsoil over Buildings B2/B3.
Location in unit
Top level of widespread colluvium across southeast ridge including modern ground.
Soil matrix
Heterogeneous but predominantly brown to light brownish gray (10YR 5/3, 6/2, occasionally 2/5YR 5/2), very loose, fine silt but sparsely sandy with many pebbles to cobbles (1-8 cm range).
