Description
Early-Middle Roman amphora widely distributed in central to western Mediterranean but also to the East. Manufactured in northern to central Tunisia. Large, cylindrical body with prominent, solid, tapering spike and distinct shoulder; short, cylindrical to truncoconical neck; outward thickened, rounded rim, often with a slight step; vertical loop handles with oval section. Bonifay identifies three subtypes (variantes A1-A3) based on differences in neck shape and size. Typical Tunisian fabric: hard, granular, reddish or orange, with saline wash.
