Description
A widespread wine amphora chiefly manufactured along the central Adriatic coast of Italy during the Late Republic to the first years of the Empire. Thick-walled, baggy body with a short spike, a strong sloping shoulder, a tall, cylindrical neck, a thickened, triangular rim, and tall loop handles, circular to oval in section. Orangish red fabric with a buff surface, soft and smooth, with occasional quartz, iron, and limestone. Directly precedes Dressel 6A (q.v.), made in same region with similar material and morphology. Mainly 1st century BCE but production somewhat earlier and later.
