Description
Early Roman wine amphora manufactured in eastern Cilicia (with Cyprus and northwestern Syria?). Distribution mainly in eastern Mediterranean but also west to Italy and France. Small, ovoid body that tapers downward to narrow ring base, with sloping shoulder, tall conical neck, rim with projecting flange, and tall, arched handles, oval in section and ridged. Pale brown fabric with a tinge of red, hard and sandy, with black sand. Mid-1st century-2nd century.
Chronology comment
Production seems to have continued into 3rd century in certain centers (e.g., Beirut).
