Description
Circular, shallow discus has figural relief, raised rim, and prominent rounded framing ring. Relief depicts two opposite nude males grappling or boxing, left one facing forward and wrapping arm down around right one, who is bearded; both have legs bent in uncertain pose. Details of musculature and hair are finely modeled. Probable scene from Centauromachy. Plain, sloping shoulder with rounded rim. Narrow, pierced handle has two grooves. Slightly concave base with single circular groove around small planta pedis in relief. This format typically has a volute nozzle with a rounded end.
Fabric, firing, surface
Fabric: 10YR 8/4, very pale brown. Slip: 10YR 4/4, dark yellowish brown. Somewhat soft, fine fabric with frequent, rounded to subrounded, small, white inclusions and rare, tiny, black bits. Thick, even, semilustrous slip preserved over most of surface. Italian.
Preservation description
Ten fragments, seven joining and three nonjoining, preserve 75% of discus, 66% of shoulder, entire handle, and 66% of base. Slight abrasion, gouging, and encrustation around handle.
