Early-Middle Roman Italian Lamp
Description
Circular, slightly concave, raised based with single groove around incuse planta pedis (right foot pointing toward nozzle), which is very narrow and indistinct.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Fabric: 5YR 8/4, pink. Slip: 7.5YR 4/6 to 5/6, strong brown. Fine, hard fabric, variable firing, has rare, very small, subrounded, white and black inclusions. Somewhat thick, semilustrous, uneven slip is mottled, detaching in flakes, and crazing; traces of a faint metallic sheen. For quality of fabric, firing, and surface, cf. Preservation comment
Four joining fragments preserve roughly two thirds of base and small part of right wall and rim. Slight, sparse chipping.
