Description
Table amphora. High, vertical neck. Thickened, lentoid rim, slightly everted, with sharp upper lip. Oval handle springs from middle of neck. By form the neck is somewhat high and vertical in relation to the notionally restored body. Both form and material overlap with vessels published by Hammond2015, so that this vessel falls within variability seen in the wide range of forms of Late Roman Amphora 2, though it is likely earlier in date.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Slightly coarse, hard fabric is fired consistently to light reddish brown; occasional medium-sized, rounded, calcareous chunks visible in break and on surface, and other small to tiny bits varying from light to dark. Fabric is adjacent to “Southern Argolid Fabric” though more coarse than usual. Unsmoothed, thin slip on all extant surface, identical in color to fabric.
Preservation comment
Five joining sherds preserve complete rim, over one half of neck with upper attachment of one handle, and initial turn to shoulder where bottom of neck extant. Extensive, slight abrasion and flaking erosion in one large patch on upper neck; slightly worn breaks; rare specks and patchy cloud of encrustation.
