Description
Patera. Floor and based molded separately in high relief as attached emblema and disk. Emblema: nude man sitting to slightly reclining on left, holding up nude woman on right sitting on him. Erotic symplegma. Base: double rosette with central button and small 8-petalled rose over large 16-petalled rose; all surrounded by rounded rim. Slipped on all surfaces.
Fabric, firing, surface
Pale yellow with a tinge of gray; consistently fired. Hard, with a smooth break. uncommon, well sorted, tiny to small, subangular and tabular dark inclusions (brown and dark gray) and rare white bits (calcareous); uncommon, tiny, golden micaceous sparkles. Dull, matte, even, thin slip, pale orange with a tinge of red, worn across high points in relief.
Preservation description
One large sherd preserves ca. 25-30% of floor and ca. 50-60% of underside with relief. Moderate, extensive abrasion with minor chipping; slight worn breaks; faint, irregular film of encrustation.
