Middle Roman Athenian Lamp, unglazed
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Fabric: pale brown to buff; gritty texture, granular fracture; somewhat coarse, common small, subrounded, well sorted, white, black, and red inclusions, and very rare, large, subrounded, grayish red chunks. Consistent firing? Surface: very thin, even wash, slightly more yellow than fabric; flaking.
Preservation comment
Three joining sherds preserve ca. 80% from lower part of lamp, including entire base, most of walls, lower handle, and lower right nozzle. Slight to moderate, extensive abrasion and pitting; worn breaks; faint white discoloration (calcareous?).
