Jug. Ovoid body. Cylindrical neck offset from body by tooled groove. Strap handle has six deep, closely spaced grooves and extends to neck and upper body. Wide grooves in body in incompletely preserved pattern: vertical, except opposite handle where they slope down to right; no grooves beneath handle. Slipped from lower neck over handle and down body.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Slightly granular fabric with mostly small to tiny light angular inclusions (many lime), some large lime chunks now exploding on exterior surface. Elongated voids. Thin, even, matte slip on exterior is distinctly darker (5YR 4/3, reddish brown); peeling in small flakes; interior plain. Dense wheel ridging on interior and exterior. Late Roman Athenian ware.
Preservation comment
Four joining sherds preserve part of upper body to just below widest point, lower neck, particularly where attached to complete handle. Slight, somewhat extensive abrasion and scattered gouging; worn breaks.
