Samos Cistern Amphora
Typological identification comment
Design of Samos Cistern amphora but somewhat thinner spike and in unusual fabric: imitative form.
Description
Narrow spike toe inserted into body with clay plug on floor. Toe has thickened, squared rim with dimple on underside.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Pale reddish brown, consistently fired; very slightly granular, hard; smooth break; uncommon tiny lime bits, rare tiny darker bits; slightly micaceous. Well smoothed outside surface. Eastern Aegean-western Asia Minor but not one of three major Samos Cistern fabrics.
Preservation comment
One large sherd preserves entire toe and part of lower body. Slight, sparse abrasion and large chips from edges; worn breaks; faint white cloud of incipient encrustation.
