Typological identification
Samos Cistern Amphora
Description
Solid spike toe tapers downward to flat bottom, marked by widening into knob at base. Spirally turned. Wide to cylindrical lower body.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
SCA Fabric 2: red to reddish brown; sandy: uncommon, small, subangular, somewhat well sorted, lime particles and rare, varied, tiny dark bits; silvery micaceous. Eastern Aegean/western Asia Minor.
Preservation comment
One large sherd preserves entire toe and small part of lower wall. Slight, somewhat extensive abrasion and a few large chips; thick patches of encrustation around lower part; gray discoloration on exterior appears to be scorched concretion.
