African Red-Slip Hayes Form 67
Description
Large bowl. Rounded middle to upper body. Stepped, flaring rim with horizontal segment below concave, everted segment. Upper rim everted almost flat, hooked at lip; single small groove near outer edge on interior face.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Slightly granular orangish red fabric with occasional, small, rounded lime inclusions. Thick slip on interior with narrow smoothing bands; thin, matte slip thin on exterior with faint turning bands on body.
Preservation comment
Two joining sherds (1621+2673) preserve ca. 10% of lip, stepped rim and middle to upper body. Slight, sparse chipping around edges; occasional patches of encrustation.
