Samos Cistern Amphora
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Reddish brown fabric fired to golden brown at surface (1 mm) but cloud of purplish brown to one side; hard, medium fine, with smooth break and soapy surface texture; uncommon, tiny to small, poorly sorted, white (calcareous and quartzitic), red and numerous gray, rarely black(?) inclusions; slightly silvery micaceous. Smoothed surface. SCA Fabric A: eastern Aegean-western Asia Minor.
Preservation comment
One sherd preserves lower part of toe. Slight, very sparse abrasion and rare gouging; worn breaks; faint film of encrustation.
