Typological identification
Late Roman/Early Byzantine Corinthian or Regional Lamp, imitation North African
Description
Almond-shaped outline. Oval(?), concave discus with raised rim and jeweled cross in low relief. Low, broad groove on shoulder contains palm branch. Design is irregular and shallow.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
2.5YR 6/4, light reddish brown, to 7.5YR 7/4, pink. Late Roman Corinthian red fabric; brick-like, very gritty, hard, with common medium-sized, rounded, white, rocky inclusions. Variable firing across surface.
Preservation comment
One fragment preserves less than one quarter of discus and shoulder and upper handle. Slight to moderate, extensive abrasion and pitting; small, somewhat frequent specks of encrustation.
