Samos Cistern Amphora
Fabric, firing, and surface description
SCA Fabric 1: reddish brown fabric fired to golden brown at surface (1-2 mm); hard, medium fine, with smooth break; uncommon, tiny to small, poorly sorted, white (calcareous and quartzitic), red and gray, and rarely black(?) inclusions; slightly micaceous (silvery and golden). Smoothed surface. Eastern Aegean-western Asia Minor.
Preservation comment
One large sherd preserves 15% of rim, one upper handle attachment, and contiguous middle to upper neck. Moderate, extensive abrasion with frequent chipping and gouging; worn breaks; thick, irregular encrustation.
