Fabric indicates an Early Roman western sigillata, more likely Italian than Gaulish?
Description
Large bowl. Thick, vertical lower wall. Molded relief of uncertain figure. Slip over exterior and interior.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Pale pink fabric; red slip with tinge of orange; consistently fired? Fine, hard; smooth to vaguely conchoidal break. Uncommon, well sorted, small, subrounded and subangular, lime and mixed red, gray or brown, and black inclusions. Even, somewhat thick, semilustrous slip.
Preservation comment
One small sherd preserves <5% of lower wall. Severe, somewhat extensive abrasion, erosion with flaking, and chipping on all surfaces; very worn breaks; frequent specks of encrusation. Thin speckling to small patches of black discoloration.
