Typological identification
Early/Middle Roman Corinthian Lamp, Palaimonion
Fabric, firing, surface
Pale yellowish brown or buff; consistently fired. Soft, fine to slightly gritty; granular break. Uncommon, small, rounded, poorly sorted brown and red inclusions; common tiny black bits; rare, small, angular lime particles. Traces of thick, white slip, peeling, on exterior. Slight turning grooves on exterior. IsthmiaXI, p. 216: Palaimonion cult-lamps Ware I.
Preservation comment
One large sherd preserves ca. 12% of rim and small part of middle to upper body. Slight to moderate, extensive abrasion and large chips from edges; severely worn breaks; thick layer of encrustation on body changing to film over rim.
