In Early-Middle Roman tradition of shallow bowls or dishes e.g. ESC Hayes Form 2
Description
Shallow bowl or dish. Flaring upper wall; short rolled lip. Slipped from interior over lip to exterior.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Pale brown fabric; orangish red slip. Gritty, hard fabric; slightly granular break and rough surface texture. Common, small, subangular, mostly dark (red, gray, black) bits; uncommon to rare, small, angular white inclusions; rare, isolated, medium, pale gray rocks; no visible mica. Slip poorly preserved: somewhat thick, semiglossy? peeling in large flakes. Not major eastern sigillata productions; doubtful regional product. Aegean: central or southern Greek?
Preservation comment
One small sherd preserves <5% of rim and small part of upper body. Extensive, moderate abrasion with pitting and flaking, partly from erosion; very worn breaks; thin, small patches of encrustation.
