Samos Cistern Amphora
Fabric, firing, and surface description
SCA Fabric 1: consistnely fired brown with a tinge of red; hard, slightly fine; granular break; uncommon, small to medium, subangular light inclusions (quartz and limestone); moderately silvery (and golden?) micaceous; other tiny red and gray bits. Eastern Aegean-western Asia Minor.
Preservation comment
One large sherd preserves 15% of rim, large part of neck and upper shoulder, and upper attachment of one handle. Moderate abrasion and slight chipping around edges; worn breaks; somewhat thick, extensive film of encrustation.
