Description
Bone pendant figurine. Standing nude male has arms close to body with elbows bent, forearms against chest, and both(?) hands extending upward to rest on cheeks. Figure has thin, angular proportions, twists slightly with right shoulder raised, and bows gently forward. Middle section shows small navel and rounded buttocks. Facial features are lost to weathering except for eye sockets. Top and back of head are smooth and apparently bare; irregular projections on either side of head perhaps represent ears or hair. On back is vertical, tenon-like projection from shoulders to waist with circular perforation for suspension. While not con-ventional orans with raised arms, figure has general aspect of votary or mourner, though apart from hands clutched to cheeks it lacks particular attributes. Low placement of suspension hole is awkward, making it unlikely that figurine hung neatly upright on string around neck.
Preservation comment
One fragment preserves upper part of figure. Moderate, extensive pitting and slight longitudinal fracturing; very slight, very sparse encrustation. Extensive gray discoloration on back and left side.
