Description
Circular outline but asymmetrical. Circular, concave discus has figural relief and prominent framing ring. Relief depicts hoplomachus advancing left away on traces of ground line, left leg raised with shinguard, right leg extended, and right arm flexed, carrying rectangular shield left and wearing crested helmet with brim and triangular garment between legs (subligaculum). Figure is crowded onto discus and extends onto framing ring; details are blurry. Plain, sloping shoulder with three small circles above nozzle and one on either side of handle. Rounded nozzle set off from shoulder by horizontal groove; traces of burning. Pierced handle. Flat, raised, circular base with shallow groove has incuse letter: Π (small serifs).
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Fabric: 2.5YR 6/6, light red. Slip: 2.5YR 4/6, red. Materail typical for ware. Large clay nodule on discus.
Preservation comment
Six joining fragments preserve over three quarters of lamp but missing one side of body and upper handle. Thin encrustation.
