Description
Circular to oval, flat to slightly concave discus has figural relief, filling hole lower right, and two prominent rounded framing rings. Relief depicts Jupiter in full-face bust with himation over left shoulder and a segmented scepter to right; in front is eagle facing left with spread wings standing on thunderbolt. Details of hair and feathers are finely modeled. Narrow, rounded, uneven shoulder with break at top for attachment of handle. The format typically has a volute nozzle with a triangular end.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Fabric: 7.5YR 6/3, pale brown to 7.5YR 7/4, pink. Slip: 7.5YR 7/8, reddish yellow, to 7.5YR 4/4, brown. Somewhat soft, dense fabric with slightly darker core. Semilustrous slip varies in thickness.
Preservation comment
Four joining fragments preserve ca. 75% of discus and rim. Traces of encrustation.
