Description
Circular, slightly concave discus with molded relief, filling hole right, and raised rim. Relief depicts nude Mercury standing forward in counterpoise but slightly turned left and wearing broad-rimmed winged hat (petasos), with outstretched right arm holding object (sack gathered at top) and left arm holding large winged caduceus that extends up over left shoulder. Chest and forelimbs of animal to lower left (ram). Rounded shoulder has narrow vine and spiral tendrils. Flat base has raised, circular ring.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Fabric: 10YR 8/4, very pale brown. Slip: 10R 5/8, red. Fine, slightly porous, micaceous fabric. Thin, semilustrous slip varies in thickness. Central Italian.
Preservation comment
16 sherds, 11 joining, preserve ca. 75% of shoulder, 50% of discus, small parts of handle and nozzle, and 30% of base. Extensive abrasion.
