Description
Tear-shaped, flat discus has design in low relief, large filling hole lower left, and sharply raised rim. Design depicts Constantinian monogram with rho closed left and top loop extending past vertical arm, raised dots, and raised rim. Shoulder with rounded rim has broad groove with row of alternating sexfoil stars and lozenges with volutes in relief (five per side). This type has long, rounded nozzle and wide, straight channel from discus to wickhole. Narrow, pointed, solid, fin-like handle. Decorative details are finely rendered.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Fabric: 2.5YR 6/6, light red. Slip: 10R 5/6, red. Very fine, soft fabric with very rare, small to medium, rounded to subrounded, white inclusions. Fine, somewhat thin, even, semilustrous slip preserved in large patches.
Preservation comment
One large fragment preserves over one-third of discus, one-quarter of shoulder, and most of handle. Deep gouge on right shoulder; very sparse traces of encrustation.
