Description
Triangular handle shield that tapers to narrow attachment with shoulder. Front has simple impressed palmette design of single circle at base of stem and five fronds per side. Back is mostly plain but shows tops of two crescent grooves (“fishtail”) near base. Dodecanesian or southwestern Asia Minor product.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Fabric: 5YR 8/4, pink. Slip: 5YR 5/6, yellowish red. Somewhat hard, fine, micaceous fabric with very rare, very small, angular, white inclusions; very small to small, subrounded to angular voids. Thin, even, semilustrous slip preserved over much of surface.
Preservation comment
One large fragment preserves entire handle shield and shallow attachment to shoulder. Traces of encrustation.
