Description
Biconvex body with circular outline. Circular, flat, plain discus has central filling hole (punched after molding) with narrow raised rim, at least two smaller secondary filling holes, and two framing rings, inner thinner than outer. Outer ring is low collar added after molding because it slightly overlaps shoulder decoration to lower right. Steeply rounded shoulder has detailed relief of olive branches sur-rounded by small grape leaves. This form typically has looping strap handle with three ridges attached just behind collar. At base of nozzle is triangular panel with head of Papposilenus in relief between angled, curving ridges that extend toward wickhole. Elongated nozzle with flat top and steeply sloping sides that would have had triangular termination (“spear-shaped”).
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Fabric: 7.5YR 8/6, reddish yellow. Slip: 2.5YR 6/6, light red, to 2.5YR 4/6, red. Somewhat soft, fine fabric with frequent, very small, white inclusions. Thin, uneven, somewhat lustrous slip preserved in grooves of discus and nozzle. Corinthian.
Preservation comment
One fragment preserves roughly one-third of discus, one-quarter of shoulder, and top of nozzle. Slight abrasion and pitting; extensive encrustation.
