Description
Zoomorphic finial from horizontal, cylindrical handle of a bowl. Vertically molded in shape of lion’s head that thickens at the back (collar?) and shows project-ing ears, round eyes, muzzle, and open mouth. Hollow; large hole pierced through below eyes at corners of mouth before firing.
Fabric, firing, surface
Fabric (core): 2.5YR 6/8, red; (surface): 10YR 7/4, very pale brown. Soft, dense fabric with rare mica and very rare, very small, rounded, white inclusions; frequent spalling. Traces of dull, reddish glaze? Surface brushed with thin, dull, white paint.
Preservation description
One fragment preserves finial on handle. Moderate, extensive abrasion with slight gouging; worn breaks; slight, sparse encrustation.
