Description
Patera. Four molded, concentric rings on underside near outside of base; within this is relief with curved outline, presumably a rosette. Slight depression at margin of floor setting off row of globules. Inside globules, emblema in deep molded relief: head of bearded male with rounded features wearing ivy crown in three-quarters view, turning right to bushy thyrsus. Upper half of base molded separately and then conjoined to lower half, leaving narrow crease through middle; two small airholes pierced in floor beside figural relief. Convex lower wall is fluted with flattened ridges. Type of ithyphallic Silenus reclining on sea leopard.
Fabric, firing, surface
Fabric: 5YR 7/3, pink. Slip: 2.5YR 5/6, red. Fine, hard fabric with uncom-mon mica and small, rare, subangular, white, red, and black inclusions. Thin, even, semilustrous slip preserved in patches.
Preservation comment
Four joining fragments preserve ca. 25% base with upper part of figural relief. Slight gouging; slight, sparse encrustation.
