2023 (July): Sherds refitted with clear synthetic resin (UHU).
Description
Small Middle Roman Amphora 7. Ridging is wide at top of toe but narrows to allow six bands of partially extant continuous spiral to toe. Overall piece is finely made in comparison to full-size version.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Granular, hard fabric fired to light brownish red with occasional, well sorted, angular and rounded dark chunks visible in breaks and on surface; fewer light chunks also in breaks and on surface; frequent small to tiny varied sandy bits. Fabric is in general somewhat less coarse than full-sized MRA7s. Surface is thinly slipped on all extant surfaces and fired slightly lighter than fabric; it is unsmoothed with signs of very light sponging on exterior.
Preservation comment
Three joining sherds (one much larger than the others) preserve 75% of hollow toe. Thin plaster adhering in large patch that extends over adjacent upper break and slightly into interior of vessel, another smaller patch approximately opposite on exterior. Surface otherwise well preserved.
