Late Roman Athenian lamp, late glazed
Description
Elliptical to tear-shaped outline. Oval flat bottom with incuse manufacturing mark: single simple palm branch surrounded by double grooves in ellipsis with single circles at front and back points.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Typical fabric (very pale red, few tiny black bits); firing, and surface treatment (thin, consistent slip slightly darker than fabric, almost a wash). Slightly thickened and smoothed seem.
Preservation comment
One large sherd preserves entire base and ca. 55% of walls from seem down. Slight, extensive pitting and abrasion and very rare gouging; mostly clean breaks; thin to thick, extensive patches of encrustation on all surfaces.
