- Description
- Flanged cooking pan with flat floor and rounded walls. Slightly rising upper face of flange is formed by flat ended tool to create distinct inner lip that would hold a lid firmly in place. Single grip applied just under flange with two extant finger impressions. Inner wall is rounded. Outer wall had distinct bands. Underside of floor is very flat and the vessel rests well on a flat surface..
- Fabric, firing, and surface description
- Fabric is discolored to more pale red by prolonged marine submersion, but it remains recognizable as typical of Middle Roman cooking fabrics of the Aegean region. Frequent light and dark tiny to medium inclusion. Surface is best preserved on upper face of flange and, where the typical light was of this series of vessels is extant.
- Preservation comment
- Three joining pieces preserve entire vessel but missing chips from rim. Soft and powdery surface, extensive pitting, flaking and erosion consistent with marine submersion over long period; original surface best preserved on upper face of flange.
