Description
Large flanged bowl with vertical rim, rounded walls, and thick ring foot. Large example of ESC Hayes Form 3 that retains some more fine aspects of construction associated with earlier products in Loeschcke 19/Hayes 3 series. Rounded walls are thin (4 mm Th.) and rim is only slightly thickened above short, well-formed flange. In profile inner face of rim continues curve of wall; outer face only very slightly convex. Upper lip of rim is rounded. Walls flare widely in a comparatively squat profile, Solid foot. Overall impression is of a well-made, quite large Hayes 3 of mid-late 2nd century.
Fabric, firing, and surface description
Fabric discolored and weathered by marine submersion. Overall appearance and feel of fabric is more orange and softer than it would have been originally. Small traces of original slip but very abraded. Despite these transformations, certain identification as ESC.
Preservation comment
Three joining sherds preserve entire base, most of body, and ca. 60% of rim and lip. Moderate, extrensive erosion, pitting, and abrasion from marine submersion; original slip almost entirely absent; somewhat worn edges. The breaks are modern and may have followed pre-existing cracks.
